Counteraction to religious extremism and terrorism in the context of contemporary challenges and threats

The research examines the features of religious terrorism as the main threat to the security of the world community that is explained by the desire of transnational terrorist groups united by ideological doctrines of radical Islam to create an Islamic state and as the deteriorating complex vector of the current geopolitical contradictions. The authors note that the terrorism of the modern era as a multi-value phenomenon is determined by globalization, an increased differentiation between rich and poor countries, impoverished and wealthy people all around the world. It is the modern scope of the recapitalization that has caused a sharp surge of a large-scale social polarization and as a consequence the resuscitation of the religious aspirations of the impoverished population for social justice and equality. Regional and local conflicts and wars, as well as aggressive Westernization on an international scale, caused a backlash of traditional societies in the Islamic world. Based on the study of the causes and sources of these phenomena, the authors provide practical recommendations for countering religious extremism and terrorism.
