The reviewed book is devoted to a little-explored episode in the history of early Soviet Ethnology in the 1920s -the development of ethnographic research in Irkutsk. The author of the introductory article, the well-known historiographer A. A. Sirina, offers to discuss a wide range of issues related to the features and prospects of scientific research in the Russian province. The review is a good genre for making a number of judgments about the phenomenon of "provincial" science.
