This article examines the functioning of the banking sector in the context of a pandemic. A number of measures of the Bank of Russia aimed at supporting the economy, including the activities of small and medium-sized businesses, as well as credit institutions, are specified. The negative and positive effects of COVID-19 on the banking industry have been identified. The possible systemic risks associated with the gradual exit from the regime of regulatory easing, the main of which is the deterioration of the state of the banks’ loan portfolio, are analyzed. The need to re-reserve loans to large borrowers will significantly increase the costs of banks, and the problem of 40% of loans restructured during the pandemic means the potential default of many companies with a high proba-bility of their going into overdue payments. The priority tasks and directions of the industry development in the post – COVID-19 period at the macro-and micro-levels are formulated.
