A fly-in fly-out work through the eyes of temporary labor migrants from Bashkortostan

The relevance of the research is based on the signifi cant prevalence of fly-in fly-out work among the residents of the Republic of Bashkortostan and the lack of empirical data about this deep-rooted phenomenon in the region. Obviously, this is not a specifi c regional problem, since a large number of Russians (and residents of other countries) are forced to work on a fly-in fly-out pattern, the working conditions of which are substandard, and which are often harmful or dangerous to health and are susceptible to precariousness, while the income and expenses, movement and lifestyle of fly-in fly-out pattern workers have economic, social and demographic consequences. The proposed paper based on the data of a representative sociological study of working conditions of fly-in fly-out pattern workers from Bashkortostan (sample size 1,155 people) analyzes the socio-demographic characteristics of fly-in fly-out pattern workers (gender, age, education, place of permanent residence, the existence of family and children) and their relationships with the reasons for choosing the fly-in fly-out pattern employment model, with the duration of involvement in this kind of work, social and labor status and the perception of working conditions. In contrast to other studies, our approach is to analyze the temporary labor migration of the residents of a particular region working on a fly-in fly-out pattern basis both inside and outside the region. It made it possible to connect the problem of fly-in fly-out work with the problems of social and economic development of the territory, to specify socio-demographic characteristics of fly-in fly-out pattern workers from the Republic of Bashkortostan; causes and factors of their involvement in fly-in fly-out pattern work migration; changes in the social and labor situation as the experience of fly-in fly-out pattern of work grows. The number of questions in the questionnaire was limited due to the survey method (via web link), which did not allow us to cover many important aspects of employment quality more broadly: the number of social guarantees, opportunities for professional growth and health maintenance (recovery), trade union membership, etc. Further research is needed on women’s involvement in flyin fly-out pattern of work and the specifi cs of rotational work in other sectors of the economy not related to the fuel and energy complex.
