The USSR collapse in Chinese documentaries

The leadership of the People’s Republic of China has always paid great attention to studying the experience of socialist states, especially the history of the Soviet Union. This article attempts to analyze Chinese documentary films which describe the reasons of the Soviet Union’s collapse. The object of this study is a set of Chinese documentaries, primarily the series The Need to Be Prudent and Take Precautions in Advance. Historical Lessons of the Death of the Soviet Communist Party. It can rightfully be considered the most typical and important docuseries, where the main reasons of the USSR’s collapse were formulated. The subject of the study is the depicting of the reasons of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in Chinese documentaries. The purpose of this article is to determine whether all the opinions of Chinese historians regarding the USSR collapse reasons are considered in Chinese documentaries, and whether the filmmakers are free in their work and in formulating the conclusions in their films. The article concludes that Chinese documentaries about the USSR collapse reasons express only the opinion supported by the Chinese Communist Party -that the collapse of the Soviet state was mainly caused by the internal problems in the Soviet Communist Party.
