The frequency of Proteus bacteria isolation in patients of orthopaedic-and-traumatological departments within the period of 1997 - 2001 was analyzed. The highest frequency of protei isolation was noted in patients of the departments of open trauma, neurosurgery and purulent orthopaedics. It was established that within the period mentioned the frequency of protei isolation decreased in patients of the department of open trauma, while protei icidence in neurosurgical patients and in those with chronic osteomyelitis remained relatively constant. It was demonstrated that the highest activity among the antibiotics being tested was noted for cefotaxim, ceftazidim and cyprofloxacin. The supposition is made that protei can be considered as indicatory microorganisms, which reflect the intensity of macroorganism anti-infection protection and the degree of infection pathology.
