Prevalence of adolescent suicides in the Irkutsk region (1991-2018)

The prevalence of adolescent suicides in the Irkutsk Region for 1991-2018 was studied. The rates of completed suicides committed by adolescents living in the Irkutsk region remained stably high and exceeded both the rates of adolescent suicides in the Siberian Federal District (12.5 per 100 thousand of the population in 2018) and the all-Russian indices (in 2018 7.9 per 100 thousand of the population). Indices of completed adolescent suicides in the territory of the Irkutsk Region for 1991-2018 decreased by 1.5 times - from 25.8 per 100 thousand to 17.7 per 100 thousand of the population. The number of boys who committed suicide exceeded the girls' rates by 2.4-5.9 times. A comparative analysis of committed suicides by adolescents - residents of urban and rural areas - showed a predominance of rural adolescent suicides by 1.1-9 times. Given the high social and medical significance of the problem for the Russian Federation as a whole, further studies of adolescent suicides at the regional and national levels and the development of a state program to prevent them are necessary.
