During the Great Patriotic War, thousands of Yakutians engaged in combat operations on the front lines. Specifically, from the Olekminsky District of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, a total of 6,067 individuals were conscripted, of whom 2,127 perished or were reported missing in action. Those remaining in the deep rear echelons – women, the elderly, children, as well as men demobilized due to injuries – labored tirelessly without respite. The Motherland accorded high esteem to the efforts of these home front laborers: by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 6, 1945, the Medal “For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945” was instituted. It was intended for the decoration of Soviet citizens for their labor feats in the rear, which ensured victory over fascist Germany. In this article, we shall examine the process of nominating distinguished individuals for the medal, their names, numerical totals, characteristics, as well as the dates of nomination for the award.
