A precision hybrid magnetic three-arm «SCAN-3» spectrometer is developed at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The spectrometer is designed to detect neutrons produced in the target by collisions of the NUCLOTRON high-interactive beam particles with target nuclei. To complete this task, the spectrometer is to consist of sets of multilayer neutron detectors based on a plastic scintillator. The R&D process of the five-layer neutrons detector is considered here. The prototype of the detector is studied using the cosmic rays and a 3.5 GeV neutron beam. In addition, the design of four-layer detectors is described.
