Development of energy efficient turbo wind turbine generator based on Magnus effect

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE. The work aims to identify the advantages of wind turbines based on the Magnus effect over other types of wind turbines in conditions of limited wind resource. RESEARCH METHODS. A prototype wind turbine at a scale of 1:10 has been designed, then an experiment has been carried out in the laboratory conditions at wind speeds ranging from 1 to 7 m/s. During the experiment main technical characteristics of the prototype have been measured and then compared with the characteristics of similar designs. RESEARCH RESULTS. The study has revealed that the wind generator based on the Magnus effect reaches a power of 400 W at wind speeds around 7 m/sec, while similar wind turbines reach it only at 11-12 m/sec. Also the wind turbine generator on the basis of the Magnus effect has got high coefficient of utilization of wind energy 0,42 against 0,35-0,4 at analogues. CONCLUSIONS. Wind generator on the basis of the Magnus effect works more effectively than analogues at low wind speeds.
