The article deals with the dramaturgical and musical features of J. Verdi's opera “La Traviata”, which became a landmark for the musical theater of the 19th century. The article analyzes the composer's innovative approach to the choice of the plot, creation of psychologically deep images and development of the conflict. Special attention is paid to the synthesis of Italian bel canto traditions with new expressive means aimed at achieving maximum dramatic truth. “La Traviata” is presented as a key work in which Verdi not only follows the vocal ideals of his era, but also transforms them, subordinating virtuosity and cantilena to the tasks of realistic embodiment of human passions and tragedy. The role of vocal parts, melody, harmony and orchestration in creating a unique atmosphere of the opera and revealing its ideological content is studied.
