Development of competition between road and rail freight transport in Russia

Today, rail transport absolutely dominates in Russia, since the main commodity category transported is raw materials, and there is no decent alternative to railways for the movement of these goods. In the niche of goods with high added value, there is a significant bias towards vehicles that are not very efficient for shippers (they suffer from poor quality of service) and harmful to the environment. In addition, the imbalance in the direction of motor transport creates an increased load on the road network, leading to its premature wear: thus, the current situation is not only unprofitable for individual companies, but also for the country as a whole.
