The difficult epidemiological situation led to the need to introduce a lockdown, which not only helped to stop the spread of COVID-19, but also led to a disruption in production and economic ties, which caused another crisis. At the same time, the business that was not ready for a long downtime suffered the most. As a result, a series of crises began in the business environment, which led to a deterioration in the financial position of enterprises and, in some cases, forced liquidation. The study assesses the development of entrepreneurship in the regions of the Central Federal District in the period before and after the pandemic, identifies the trends that have developed under the influence of the crisis and their causes. It has been established that against the backdrop of a series of crisis phenomena, activity in the field of entrepreneurship began to decline both in the country as a whole and in the regions of the Central Federal District. If in 2017 there were 1.49 million active enterprises in the district, today their number has decreased to 938 thousand. Despite the intensification of the crisis in the last 2 years, the number of liquidated enterprises in the Central Federal District did not increase and continued to decline. In 2021, the number and share of enterprises that are dynamically growing in terms of turnover decreased everywhere, which is a direct consequence of the negative impact of the pandemic. For example, in Moscow in 2019, the share of fast-growing enterprises accounted for about 4.1% of the total number of active enterprises of the subject, and in 2021 their share was halved to 1.9%.
