The development of cultural institutions in Northeast Russia, 1950s-1960's

Based on archival materials of the party and Soviet government, the article explores the development of a network of cultural and educational institutions in the Northeast of Russia in the 1950s and 1960s. Special attention is paid to the institutions that were of particular importance for Magadan and Magadan region -music and drama theater, regional library and local history museum. The author also focuses on the activities of creative unions, red yarangas, development of cinema and television. The author concludes that the first years after the establishment of the region were a period of transition for the cultural sphere: despite the increase in funding, the number of cultural institutions grew at an insufficient pace, the network of trade union cultural institutions was reduced and administrative contradictions with Dalstroi became visible.
