Gastric cancer recurrence: recent problems

Treatment results of 75 patients with recurrent gastric cancer were analyzed. The patients were treated at the Abdominal Department of the Cancer Research Institute during 2000-2008 period. All patients were underwent distal subtotal gastric resection for antral cancer. Cancer recurrence in gastric stump occurred 5 months after gastric resection according to Billroth-I (medium 10 months) and 11 months after gastric resection according to Billroth-II (medium 18,5 months). Out of 43 re-operated on patients, there were 28 (65,1 %) patients who underwent radical gastric stump extirpation. Resectability rates were 13 % and 56,8 % for patients after gastric resections according to Billroth-I and Billroth-II, respectively. One- two- and three -year survival rates were 61 %, 38,5 % and 19,2 %, respectively after radical surgery for recurrent gastric cancer.
