School education reform in Tyumen uyezd of Tobolsk governorate in the first quarter of the 19th century: main directions and their implementation

The aim of the study is to examine Alexander I's education reform and assess the implementation of its school component in Tyumen uyezd. Scientific novelty is due to the introduction into scientific circulation of previously unused archival office materials, which makes it possible to trace the development of school education in Tyumen. The author concludes that the implementation of the reform in Tyumen uyezd took place in conditions of “deviation” from its original intent. A contradiction emerged between the vertical continuity of the links in education and the horizontal corporate class isolation. Meanwhile, the Tyumen school was virtually the only source of knowledge dissemination in the uyezd. The “challenge” of progressive ideas (non-estate, free-riding) failed to stir up traditional Siberian society due to all-Russian trends and regional peculiarities. The insufficient development of productive forces and commodity-money relations did not lead the Tyumen society to the realization of the need to acquire knowledge as a tool for adapting to new conditions.
