The article is devoted to the history of the state’s struggle with the Russian Orthodox Church and the process of closing of the Orthodox churches in Vladikavkaz in the 1920s. For the first time ever the author introduces into scientific use the data reflecting the mechanism of implementation of the decrees passed by the Council of People's Commissars “Concerning freedom of worship, church and religious communities”, dated January, 20,1918.
