The Republic of Buryatia: results of the 2023 elections to the people’s khural

The article discusses the main results of the 2023 parliamentary elections in the Republic of Buryatia. According to the author, significant changes occurred compared to the 2022 elections. First, the composition of the participants in the electoral competition changed, with a notable decrease not only in the share of independent candidates but also in the number of candidates from non-mainstream political parties. Second, there was societal consolidation, which strengthened the position of the “party of power” and weakened the opportunities for minority parties. This also impacted the governance of the parliament, making it more “compliant”. In Buryatia, only parliamentary parties participated in the elections, signaling a stabilization of the party system in the region. The party “New People” gained seats in the parliament. The “A Just Russia - For Truth” party's regional branch is in a crisis state. These and other factors suggest the beginning of a new phase in the development of political parties, where the position of the “party of power” is reinforced and the opposition's influence is diminished.
