The article presents the preliminary results of the project № 15-11-14003 implemented with financial support from the Russian Humanities Research Foundation and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The author discusses some aspects of the history of relationship between state authorities and indigenous people of the Kolyma region in the first third of the XX century. The paper carries out a historical review of the main events, which influenced social development of the indigenous peoples of the Yakut North-East. It has been found that during this period there was significant transformation of the traditional economy of aboriginal people, which reinforced the threat of their cultural assimilation with outsiders. At the same time administrative and territorial centralization created preconditions for development of ethnic identity of people inhabiting the Kolyma region.
