The article deals with the historical aspects of the development of the energy industry. What factors in the early 20th century in the field of innovative solutions influenced the development of the industry in Russia, and led it to the digital development. The issues of the impact of various events on the industry are discussed. The article reflects the current situation in the use of digital technology and artificial intelligence for automation of the energy industry.
