Resistance of two-row barley varieties and collection samples to covered smut in Western Siberia

The infection of barley by smut diseases leads to a decrease in the yield and quality of grain. To reduce the harmfulness of such diseases, it is necessary to use resistant varieties adapted to the conditions of Russian regions. The aim of the research was to evaluate the resistance to covered smut of spring filmy two-row barley varieties created at the Omsk Agrarian Scientific Center (Omsk ASC, Omsk), as well as a set of promising samples from the Collection of the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR, St. Petersburg, Russia). Research was carried out on the field in the southern forest-steppe of Western Siberia in 2016-2019. Before sowing, artificial inoculation of barley seeds with teleospores of the covered smut fungus Ustilago hordei (Pers.) Kell. et Swing was carried out following the VIR method.
