The limiting factor affecting the formation of the grain harvest of winter barley in The middle Volga region is the low temperature at the depth of tillering. Therefore, increasing winter hardiness of winter barley varieties is the main task in breeding. The years characterized by favorable and unfavorable conditions of winter barley wintering were established. The best for overwintering in The middle Volga region is a variety of winter barley Zhiguli. Genealogy and characteristics of the Zhiguli variety are shown. The variety is characterized by a high protein content in the grain of 13.2%. It has a high level of winter hardiness and drought resistance. The study of the effect of sowing time on the yield of winter barley. When studying the magnitude of the yield found that the second sowing date has led to a better productivity of the varieties in comparison with earlier or later period. So when sowing on September 11, the average yield of three varieties was 42.7 C/ha, and when sowing on September 2 and September 19 - 29.7 and 40.5 C/ha, respectively.
