The article considers the importance of farms in the structure of the agricultural complex of the USA and Russia. The historical reasons for the wide spread of farming in the United States are determined. The classification of US farms by the volume of economic transactions is presented. The share of farms and private households in the structure of agricultural production in Russia is determined. The problems of domestic agricultural cooperatives are revealed.
