The role and place of Jewish banishment in penal system of the Russian empire

For well-known political and ideological reasons, the history of Russian Jews has long remained a closed topic. Today a rich pre-revolutionary historiographic tradition of studying Jewish history is being revived. At the same time, researchers consider the position of Russian Jews not only within the Jewish Pale in the central regions of Russia, but also in the Russian province.
