The role of historical memory in the development of ethnic identity

The authors explain the relevance of the unbiased study of the historical past in the formation of the historical memory and national (collective) identity. The associated range of problems is considered in the context of specific events that took place on the territory of Chechnya and Ingushetia at different times. The authors substantiate the need to overcome the problems, to research new areas in the Caucasus studies, to study great history of the people living in the region. The research conclusions and generalizations have not only the theoretical and methodological significance, but also the practical one, since they can be a basis for serious discussions and debates.
