The article deals with the scientific research and activity of the National Museum of the Republic of Buryatia in the context of the development of the museum affairs and tourism in Baikal region. The usage of the most valuable objects of the cultural heritage including the archaeological culture of the Hunnic epoch, Buddhist ritual items, ethnographic and arts and crafts collections of Siberian region, has become one of the strategic conceptions of the representation of Eastern Siberia in domestic and international projects. The authors focus their attention on the role of national museums in preserving both cultural wealth and non-material heritage. Collecting, preserving, interpreting rich museum collections through various exhibitions and educational programs and lectures, the creation of appropriate conditions for preserving museum items, keeping careful attitude to the historic memory and historical and cultural heritage of the peoples living the Republic of Buryatia, bringing up the younger generations are the principal postulates of modern museums. The actualization of the museum heritage through the prism of the tourism development and touristic infrastructure has greatly impacted on the development of the Asian part of Russia, which in the past was the territory of trading routes and interaction of spiritual cultures of different tribes and ethnic groups.
