The article examines the role of the ophthalmologist in the early diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) as a key element of a multidisciplinary approach. The importance of employing modern ophthalmological techniques - such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual evoked potentials (VEP), and perimetry - for detecting demyelinating lesions of the optic nerves at the preclinical stage is substantiated. Emphasis is placed on the need for clinical vigilance and timely referral of patients for neuroimaging and serological investigations.
