The role of the Penza zoo in the conservation of rare animal species

Бесплатный доступ

The role of zoos in the conservation of rare species is to preserve individuals as a reserve of not only organisms, but also genetic material. Independent «zoo» micropopulations are also being formed. The role of zoos as places of rehabilitation of rare species is also difficult to overestimate. Currently, the Penza Zoo presents 27 species of animals listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. The number of these species averages 2,4% of all zoo populations. The work carried out in the organization contributes not only to the preservation of rare species, but also to their reproduction and maintenance of local populations.
