The article examines the role of socialist realism in the formation of Soviet ballet in the 20-30th of the twentieth century. It is considered the combination of the traditions of classical choreography with innovative ideas in the spirit of socialist realism. The influence of ideological attitudes on the formation of an artiste image in classical choreographic art is studied. It is shown how the conformist tactics of artists’ behavior led to a change in artistic images in ballet. The best socialist-realistic ballet works of that time, which became masterpieces of world choreography, are analysed. The author traces the path through which ballet in the Soviet Union becomes one of the main directions in the entire Soviet socialist-realist art, subsequently becoming, despite its bright ideological orientation, the standard for classical choreographic art all over the world. The conclusion is made about the possibility of creating the greatest works of art, in particular, in classical choreography, despite the strict ideological framework that limits the creative possibilities of the artist.
