The article deals with the problem of personality transformation in Russia through the historical perspective of the 20th century. The social situation in the beginning of the century caused the arrival of people with particular social activity and responsibility. With the establishment of Soviet power, new unique opportunities for human social mobility appeared. Education, military service, work in production, Komsomol and party organizations acted as social elevators. The ideology of Soviet society contributed to the development of necessary personality traits - diligence, collectivism, patriotism, internationalism, responsibility. The post-Soviet period brought the serious changes in social conditions that influenced the identity of the Russians. The possibilities of social elevators have declined sharply in recent decades. The modern Russian is not able to accept the responsibility, struggle for his rights, he is spiritually and morally weak, he has lost those qualities that once gave him the power to transform.
