The paper considered the growing relationship between Russia and China regarding the establishment of the border and delimitation of the territories along the Amur River starting from the middle of the 19th century. The research focused on the history of solving the border issue in the eastern section of the Russian-Chinese border in the late 20th - early 21st century. The paper had analyzed the Russian government’s plans for the development of the Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island since 2005, revealed the reasons for the backlog of the plan, and identified the problems that needed to be addressed. It is concluded that the development of the Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island divided between Russia and China appears to be promising for both countries. Russian slowness in implementing the current plans may later lead to the need to address the issues of state security and the preservation of the Far Eastern territories beyond the Russian Federation.
