Russia at the crossroad: the view of the western sociologists

This article analyses how the Western social scientists view the political transformations in contemporary Russia, conceptualized as the developmental state. It argues that although Russian bureaucracy is a conservative factor, the activist elite may induce bureaucracy to work for the reforms. The forthcoming change of the head of the state does not mean stagnation, but signals an adoption of a more gradual and systematic approach to the reforms.
