Russian museums of memory: ways of formation and main stages of development

The article analyzes the processes of formation and development of museums of memory in Russia from the late 1980s to the early 2020s, describes the experience of creating museum and memorial complexes in the national republics of the Russian Federation and in authentic places of memory (on the territory of former labor camps and prisons). It is noted that the emergence of museums of memory in Russia was preceded by the formation of a public request to preserve the memory of the victims of political repression in the USSR. The development of museums of memory is considered in the context of the implementation of state policy to perpetuate the memory of victims of political repression.
