The article analyses the situation currently existing in the Russian market of scientific publications. The author outlines and substantiates the important role of academic publishing in the intellectual development of the society. The historical aspect of the problem of scholarly publishing in Russia is considered. By case study of Kuban State University, the author examines the experience of regional university publishing houses.
