The paper considered (upon a review of the Russian legislation and the viewpoints expressed by researchers) the Russian and Soviet-time traditions of shaping legal literacy in citizens and the occupation-relevant legal literacy as well. The study discovered the specifics arisen of the priority of ideology assignment, and the Soviet lawyers having gradually escaped the frame. The survey mentioned an integrative function of the legal literacy in Soviet times; the author inferred from all this the Russian roots and traditions that involved the shaping of legal literacy, in contrast with the allegations about the purely Western origin of implementing it.
