The article is devoted to the history of Mongolian-Russian relations in the post-Soviet period. Being in the wake of the Soviet Union, Mongolia copied the Soviet foreign policy strategy, based on the international aid of the USSR and other socialist countries. Because of this strategy, Mongolia narrowed the possibility of holding an independent foreign policy. The fall of the Soviet Union marked the beginning of a new round in the history of Mongolia. Democratic period for Russia and Mongolia was characterized by rupture of economic ties, the weakening of the political dialogue. By the second half of the 1990s, the Russian government has come to realization of a new, more thought-out policy towards Mongolia. A number of important meetings at the highest level prepared a new cooperation platform. In the 2000s, the strengthening of political dialogue, solution of the problem of «a great debt», visa-free regime between Russia and Mongolia had an effect to increase the intensity of the socio-economic and political relations in the new democratic format.
