The article deals with the activity of the Russian counterespionage service in the Far East which aspired to counteract the Japanese espionage in the region after the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905. The author reviews the modes of work of the Japanese intelligence services, which involved members of Japanese colonies, trading and industrial companies, the press, diplomats for espionage. The Russian counter-intelligence service, represented by the intelligence units of military commands and the special corps of gendarmes, despite insufficient financial and human resources, applied a wide range of means to fight against foreign secret services in the Far East on the threshold of the First World War and during it.
