Te Department of Church History continues traditions that were established 70 years ago, during the rebirth of Leningrad Teological Academy. In this article, the author studies, based on archival materials from the archives of St. Petersburg Teological Academy, the process of recreating the Leningrad school of church history. Te author identifies the main processes: invitations extended to professors for teaching historical disciplines at the Academy, the organization of the educational process, and the defence of qualification papers (master’s and candidate’s theses). Te rebirth of the theological academy in Russia’s Northern Capital led to the fact that the historical approach came to dominate in all theological disciplines and allowed an independent school of scholarship to emerge, which could continue its work in an atheist Soviet state.
