The article deals with the disclosure of the theme of Russian history in the creative work of 19th century artists: V.Shvarts and N.Bogdanov-Belsky. Examples include the analysis of paintings V. Schwartz "A Scene from the Home Life of Russian Tsars" and N.Bogdanov-Belsky "At the Door of the School."
