The first part of the work is devoted to differentiating meanings of such terms as «zimovye» (winter hut), «ostrog» (stockade town), «gorod» (town), «krepost» (fortress), «kreml» (kremlin), which is performed on the basis of the literature review dealing with identifying the typical features of these objects in Siberia. The differentiation of meanings is based on the three main criteria, i.e. the historical, administrative and architectural and compositional ones, which does not consider the archeological specifics. The second part of the work deals with differentiating archeological characteristics of the «ostrog».
