The paper has brought to light personal and creative communication between the Russian sculptor of Mordvinian origin S. D. Erzia (Nefyodov, 1876-1959) and his contemporaries, Ukrainian sculptors A. P Arkhipenko and I. P. Kavaleridze. The study also has shown the part he took in a creative making of Ukrainian sculptors belonging to a new generation, namely M. A. Gritsyuk and G. P. Levchuk, who repatriated from Argentina in the 1950-ies. The author considered a number of general themes in easel and monumental sculpture of both S. D. Erzia and the Ukrainian artists, first of all, projects they successfully realized or failed to, in picturing the characters of Taras Shevchenko (by all the sculptors) and Feodor Chalyapin (by S. D. Erzia and I. P. Kavaleridze).
