The article carries out philosophical analysis of the elements of sociocultural space of a town, which may trigger self-destructive behaviour of people. Applying dialectical and system approaches the author shows that underdevelopment of sociocultural space of a provincial town of Vologda region is a determinant of selfdestructive behaviour of its inhabitants. The article deals with the specifics of the mutual influence of a human and urban environment. The socio-cultural challenges of modern small towns of Vologda region are identified. The author believes it is necessary to improve the sociocultural space of the town in order to decrease the self-destruction rate.
