Brown leaf rust Puccinia recondita Roberge ex. Desm (syn. Puccinia triticina Erikss) stably manifests itself in the Middle Volga region and during the epiphytotium causes considerable economic damage, reducing the grain yield and deteriorating its quality. Creation of resistant to this pathogen varieties, the most appropriate and cost-effective method to combat this pathogen. In the paper shows a purposeful application in Samara Research Scientific Institute of Agriculture, in breeding for resistance to leaf brown rust, highly expressive genes. The scenario of breeding of genotypes with so-called “vertical” genes is used. As a result of sequential inclusion in the selection process of the Lr3, Lr23, Lr19 LrAg # 2 genes, a series of rust-resistant varieties of spring common wheat have been created, each year occupying an area of about 350 thousand hectares. It is shown that this scenario provides an effect already in the early stages, increasing the concentration of resistance genes from 53.6% to 82.6%.
