Selenium: pressing medical, epidemiological, and environmental challenges of Karelian Republic

Pressing challenges of ecology attributed to the presence of selenium in landscapes of Karelia are summed up. A question of selenium status of the population and relevance of the study assessing the role of selenium in the endemic goiter development in conditions of Karelian Republic are considered. Basic directions of the future research addressing selenium problem are defined.
