In this article presents a detailed analysis of the status-symbolic nature of the image and its increasing role in modern society. Various directions of sociological thought on symbols, their place in collective behavior, the formation of images and opinions, as well as stereotypical attitudes and selfperception of the individual are considered. The nature of rooting of significant signs and symbols in the mind of a person, through the influence of values, stereotypes, reflection of society is analyzed. A review of the theory of sociological inter-actionism in the perspective of the study of signs, as well as features of human behavior during interactions, is given. A certain attention is paid to crises in the revaluation of significant symbols, to the peculiarities of forming the image on the model of the presentation of the personality to the society, and by analogy - the formation of the image on the basis of regular reactions of the society to the image of the individual. The details of the formation of the most significant symbols, the appropriateness of their manifestation in different social groups are taken into account. Based on the analysis of materials, specific features of the construction of the sign model are highlighted, which must be taken into account when forming the image.
