The main thesis of the article centres round the meaning of the word "light" in the works by B.Shiryaev and O.Volkov, the authors of the XXth century. In their memoirs they depict the Solovetsky camp of the 20-30-s of the XX century. The "light-and-dark" opposition, caused by the precedent-related to the Bible motif is revealed in their works. The symbolism of the light reveals the authors' attitude to the described events. The authors' different perception of the events of those times is determined by their personalities and worldoutlook. B.Shiryaev using the symbolism of the light thinks over the spiritual aspect of the Eastern and Western cultures and the perspectives of the Western and Eastern Christian traditions.
