Synchronous and metachronous local recurrences and distant metastases in breast cancer patients

The study included 547 patients with stage T1-4N0-2M0 operable invasive breast cancer being treated at the Cancer Research Institute from 2000 to 2005. The follow-up was 5 years and more. Seventy-six (13,8 %) patients developed breast cancer local recurrence. Distant metastases were diagnosed in 133 (24,3 %) patients. Hematogenous metastases were more frequently observed in patients with the evidence of local cancer progression. Both forms of cancer progression were detected synchronously in 50 % of cases.
