One of the genuinely basic concepts of Russian mentality is терпение. Preliminary observations allow to assume that quite a number of words with the root mepn- covered a long way from initial syncretism to polysemy bordering in some cases on enantiosemy. At least there are certain tendencies for polysemy transformations into the latter.
