The object of the author's analysis in the article is a piece of fiction «Povest'» by Boris Pasternak dating back to 1929. Under consideration are the genre characteristics of the text, together with its structural elements, all pointing at the literary form of «povest'» in question (e.g. the initiation theme, the cyclic arrangement of the plot, its inner symmetry, etc.). The author's claim, however, consists in stating that the title is more suggestive than a mere genre characteristic, for being related to the intra-textual semantic layers, it explicates the meaning of the whole text and, in particular, Pasternak's view on the revolution.
