The article deals with various aspects of interrelation between the plot and the space structure of the novel "Exile" by L.Feuchtwanger, which is devoted to the life of German emigrants. The author of the article analyses how some characters of the novel cross the symbolic border between the dead world and the living one. Different variants of artistic presentation of such a crossing are considered; the crossing implies either crossing a geographic border or a symbolic one in the world of a piece of music created by the character. It is revealed that the prerequisite of the border crossing is a sacrifice. The border space where the crossing takes place is named the "chronotopos of change" according to the theory of M.M.Bakhtin.
